The Origins of Human Consciousness with Dr. Tom Froese

Snake Venom and the Ritualized Mind Alteration Hypothesis
MARSEILLE, FRANCE - APRIL 20:Views of the cave paintings Cosquer cave in Marseille before the official opening the 4 june on April 20, 2022 in Marseille, France. As the replica cave officially opens its doors to visitors on June 4,2022,a team of archaeologists and divers are racing to save the ancient underwater cave paintings from climate change and marine pollution in south-east France. Hand stencils in Cosquer cave, with its entrance now located 37m underwater due to the Holocene sea level rise. Notice many fingers are missing, possibly due to ritual removal.

Dr. Tom Froese is a researcher in enactive artificial intelligence investigating the systematic organization of life and mind. He received his PhD in cognitive science from the University of Sussex, did postdoctoral work at the University of Tokyo, and led a research group at UNAM (Mexico's top university) studying embodied cognition and the origins of social complexity in Mesoamerica. He currently serves as faculty at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology and as editor-in-chief of the journal Adaptive Behavior.

We primarily discuss Froese’s Ritualized Mind Alteration Hypothesis, which holds that in the Upper Paleolithic, rituals were developed that helped establish subject-object separation. These rituals included:

  • Extended periods of sensory deprivation (e.g. in caves or through seclusion)

  • Physical hardships and pain, which help create subject-object separation by forcing awareness back into the body

  • Social isolation to disrupt normal modes of being absorbed in the world

  • Psychedelic substances that profoundly interrupt normal mental functioning

  • Communal ritual aspects involving many participants

  • Often occurring during puberty/adolescence when reflective consciousness becomes more necessary

A key insight from Dr. Froese's 2014 paper captures the core idea:

“The rites’ original purpose could have been related to the facilitation of the ontogenetic development of young initiates’ normally fully situated minds into a more stabilised subject-object dualistic form, one which is more suitable for enculturation into a symbolic culture... Over time this original purpose of socially enhanced mental development would have become less essential as we and our cultural contexts co-evolved to allow individuals to more easily adapt to and reproduce a variety of highly symbolic practices”

You may notice this is precisely what I proposed two years ago in the Snake Cult of Consciousness. Hard to be unique in this world (though I do make contributions about women, snakes, myths, etc). But in science multiple people coming to the same model is a good thing. That Froese is a domain expert, and his version made it through peer review is a good sign for the Eve Theory of Consciousness.

At 57:00, I get to tell him my theory that the first drug of choice was snake venom. He immediately gets that this solves the problem of availability and experimentation—the first administration was likely not willing. We also discuss the possibility of continuity in rituals from the Ice Age, particularly relating to hook swinging. For more on my treatment of The Ritual, see:
